The red flags to look for if you're an influencer e-mailing a brand
Let’s play a game of SPOT THE ISSUES WITH THIS E-MAIL from a brand who earned $800 million in revenue last year:
1. The offer is a fraction of the cost of a creator at the size they were looking for (50K+ following) — not to mention the added costs of doing video content (this would be a $3-5K project if it was with me, for example)
2. If you accept any form of compensation (be it cash, gifts, affiliate revenue) you MUST clearly disclose it using the hashtags they are asking you to avoid…it’s literally illegal not to disclose, and the blame falls on YOU as a creator so it’s extremely problematic they are asking you to assume the risk
3. Asking a creator to use their content in paid advertising is now an ADDITIONAL ASK — licensing your content for promotional use — which deserves additional compensation…they really tried to sneak it in there and see if you’d notice
I mentioned the size of the company so that you understand that this is a company with the resources to hire the right experts to manage their Influencer marketing campaigns correctly, and enough money to compensate people fairly. It’s a “no thanks” from me!
Don’t fall for an e-mail like this, and if you’re looking for the right words to say back to something like this then keep an eye out for something big coming soon 👀
